UN-Arab League envoy for Syria Lakhdar Brahimi on Monday held talks with Iraqi leaders in Baghdad about the Syrian crisis, expecting an international conference on Syria to be held at the end of November.
According to a statement released by Prime Minister office, Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki received Brahimi in his office in the heavily fortified Green Zone in central Baghdad. During their meeting, Maliki expressed his hope to reach a peaceful solution to the Syrian crisis, which could spare the Syrian people from more tragedies and pains.
"The dead end of military options made the potentials for success of peace initiatives more palatable," Maliki said.
For his part, Brahimi "hoped the international peace conference on Syria, also known as Geneva II, to be held at the end of next month," according to the statement.
Brahimi also urged Iraq to support a peaceful solution by encouraging all parties, including the Syrian regime, to make necessary concessions for the solution, the statement added.
Earlier in the day, Brahimi arrived in Baghdad airport in the afternoon and was received by Iraqi Foreign Minister Hoshyar Zebari.
Brahimi arrived in Baghdad after wrapping up a two-day visit to Cairo. His visit comes as part of his tour in the Middle East to make preparations for convening Geneva II peace conference on Syria.
The conference had initially been planned for late May, but was repeatedly postponed over disagreements as to who should have seats at the table.
Iraq's Shiite-dominated government has maintained close ties with Syria, whose President Bashar al-Assad is a member of Alawite sect, an offshoot of Shiite Islam.
