After nearly 16 years of war, what is the way forward for Afghanistan? That’s the question NATO leaders are asking after a summit in Brussels. The members of the military alliance renewed their commitments to Afghan partners as NATO leaders weighed deploying additional troops. So what’s next for Afghanistan? Will it be a good idea for the US to send more troops to Afghanistan?

Kurt Volker, former United States Permanent Representative to NATO, said it would be a good idea to have a clear goal and figure out a strategy of what is needed to achieve that goal.

“I think right now we are in a situation, over the past several years, we are within the minimized level of support, aimed to prevent failure, but not achieving a long-term stability, a long-term sustainability in Afghanistan. Five thousand troops may be a good number or it may not, since it’s not clear to me I don't think it's clear to anyone at this point, what exactly that is going to do other than more of the same. I do think we need to look at what’s the goal, what can we achieve, and what is required for that.”
