Donatella Versace brought glamour and nostalgia to Milan Fashion week on Friday by creating a blockbuster reunion show in tribute to her late brother Gianni.

The designer shocked audiences by bringing together some of the biggest models of the 1990s, all of whom had worked closely with Gianni Versace, back to the catwalk.

Cindy Crawford, Naomi Campbell, Carla Bruni, Helena Christensen and Claudia Schiffer, all now in their forties and fifties, appeared in gold lame at the end of the show.

A voice declared: "Gianni, this is for you."

Versace was shot dead on the steps of his Miami Breach mansion in 1997.

The gunman, 27-year-old Andrew Cunanan, took his own life days later after an inexplicable crime spree that left at least five dead.

Friday's show served as a tribute to the superstar fashion designer on the 20th anniversary of his death, and featured a catalogue of his designs from over the years.

The Versace look was renowned for its boldness and excess.

On Friday, models walked on in baroque designs, skin-tights catsuits adorned with Andy Warhol's Pop Art creations, broad-shouldered suits and swimsuits adorned with sea stars and shells.

They walked the runway to George Michael's hit Freedom '90 - a nod to the track's video, which featured many of those models that surprised audiences at the close of the show.

"We pay homage to not only (Gianni's) artistic genius but to who he was as a man, and above all, as my brother," Donatella wrote in her notes to Versace's Spring/Summer 2018 collection.
