At least one person was killed and 10 others injured in the partial collapse of a condominium building during Thursday's early hours in the U.S. state of Florida, local authorities said.

Rescue crews are searching for survivors as part of a massive emergency response to the incident in the town of Surfside in Miami-Dade County.

The 12-storey building had 136 apartment units, of which about 55 collapsed, according to Ray Jadallah, fire chief of the Miami-Dade Fire Rescue.

More than 80 rescue units were sent to the location, the fire department said.

It is not clear if there could be more casualties as search and rescue efforts are still ongoing.
