At least 12 people were killed and dozens of others injured when a boiler in a garment accessory-making factory at Tongi on the outskirts of Bangladesh capital Dhaka went off on Saturday morning, a police official said.

According to the official who did not like to be named, the explosion took place at around 7:00 a.m. local time at TEMPAC Garment Accessories, and the casualties were caused as the blast led to a devastating fire that swept through the three-story factory building for hours.

"10 bodies have been recovered from the accident site shortly after the accident," he said and added two more people succumbed to their injuries later in a hospital.

The official said the death toll may go up as many people have sustained critical injuries.

The cause of the accident is being investigated.
