An aeroplane carrying 183 passengers overshot runway while landing at Mumbai airport in India's western state of Maharashtra, officials said Wednesday.

The SpiceJet plane overshot Tuesday night and skidded off the runway into a marshy area.

According to officials, no one was hurt and all the passengers were evacuated safely from the plane using chutes.

"Last night at around 10:00 p.m. (local time) a spice jet aircraft with 183 people onboard overshot the runway and skidded off into the unpaved surface," an official said. "The flight was coming from Varanasi city of Uttar Pradesh."

Reports said no fire or smoke was reported in the aircraft.

Airline officials say the wet runway caused the plane to skid.

On Tuesday night, heavy rains lashed Mumbai, following which runway was closed and flights diverted. The rains triggering water logging and traffic jams.

Meteorological department officials have predicted more rains and high tides in the next 24 hours.
