A vision for the future of the European Union (EU) needs to be discussed with the participation of all member states, Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico said on Sunday.

According to Fico, it was a mistake that only six founding members - France, Germany, Belgium, The Netherlands, Luxembourg and Italy- took part in talks on the EU's future after Britain's referendum on its EU membership.

"It's impossible to agree on something only among the large countries again and then put it on the table for us to discuss. The idea of what to offer the public must be the result of a very difficult discussion held by all the 27 member states remaining in the European Union." said Fico. Fico made the comment after foreign ministers from the six countries met in Berlin on Saturday to discuss EU's future without Britain.

Fico doesn't perceive the outcome of the British referendum as a tragedy, but rather as tough reality and the reaction of the British to European politics.

"The EU must answer the question as to what happened and what was wrong," stated Fico, stressing the need to start a discussion on what to offer to EU citizens. He said he wanted to launch informal talks on the union's future during the Slovak Presidency of the EU Council, which begins on July 1.
