U.S. economy: How some states are plotting their reopening

While the Trump administration has been adamant on reopening U.S. states and revitalizing the economy, some people, like the Director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases Dr. Anthony Fauci, are asking for more caution. Here's the latest in U.S, reopening news.

During his Senate testimony via teleconference, Dr. Anthony Fauci, the U.S. top infectious disease expert, warned there will be "really serious" consequences and deeper economic damage if states reopen too quickly.

"There is no doubt, even under the best of circumstance, when you pull back on mitigation you will see some cases appear," Dr. Fauci said.

Virginia

Governor Ralph Northam will be delaying northern Virginia's reopening to May 29 after a coronavirus outbreak in the region. Nonessential businesses throughout the rest of the state are set to reopen on Friday.

California and Tesla

On Monday, Elon Musk, CEO of electric car company Tesla, said he would reopen the U.S. plant in California, defying local orders to stay closed.

U.S. President Donald Trump tweeted his support for the move, saying it can be done "Fast Safely!"

New York

Governor Andrew Cuomo said three upstate regions of New York are ready to reopen, the lights on Broadway will continue to remain closed through Labor Day in September. The theatres, the most-visited tourist attractions in New York City, had set a tentative reopening on June 7.
