Traffic accident kills 16 in E China

A traffic accident has left 16 people dead and 10 others injured in east China's Jiangxi Province, local authorities said early Wednesday.

The accident occurred in Nanfeng County of Jiangxi at around 8:40 p.m. Tuesday, when a vehicle overturned on a provincial highway, according to the Nanfeng county government.

A total of 28 people, including 24 women, were aboard the vehicle when the accident happened. They are all farmers from the Taihe Township of Nanfeng County and were on their way back home from a temporary job in Fujian Province.

Fifteen people were killed on the spot, and one died after medical treatment failed. Ten people were still being treated in local hospitals.

Investigation into the accident is under way.
