The Special Investigation Unit under orders from the Inspector General of Police N.K. Ilangakoon has launched a probe into the complaints to identify those who pose as close associates of president or his family members and defrauded the people.
In a majority of these complaints, fraudsters have misled the public by promising overseas jobs, misusing the President's or his family's names.
Reportedly, 94 such cases are pending in courts and at least 138 people have been arrested. The police investigations are underway to arrest another 39 individuals, local news website Ada Derana reported.
The police department has also planned to launch a special scheme at all police stations across the country in addition to the Special Investigation Unit.
The police have called on the public to provide any information regarding such crimes to the police headquarters and assured to keep the identity of informants confidential. Enditem
