MyanmarlanguagestatenewspaperMyanmaAlinnsaidhehadenteredamonasteryinthecentraltownofPyinOoLwinonMondayforafive-daystint,takingthemonktitle"UThandidamma".

"ThoseclosetoUTheinSeinsaidhewillpracticemeditationduringatemporarymonkhoodofaboutfivedays,"thepapersaid.

ItaddedthathehadpromisedBuddhisteldershewouldbeordainedasamonkoncehefinishedhisroleaspresident.

SpendingperiodsinthemonkhoodiscommonforBuddhistmeninMyanmar,whereyoungboysareexpectedtospendatleastthreedaysasnovicesinmonasteriesduringtheirchildhood.

TheinSein,aformerjuntageneral,ledMyanmar'squasi-civiliantransitionalgovernmentthroughfivestunningyearsofreform,asthenationopeneduptotheworldafterdecadesofrepressiveandisolatingarmyrule.

Onlyafewyearsearlierthejuntaledaviolentcrackdownonlargelymonk-ledproteststhatweredubbedthe"SaffronRevolution".

Theunobtrusive70-year-oldhandedpowertoSuuKyiandherproxypresidentHtinKyawlastweek.

Whilenotinparliamentheisexpectedtocontinuetoleadhisarmy-backedparty,nowinoppositionafterSuuKyi'spartywonlandmarkNovemberpollsinalandslide.
