At least eight people, including four children, were killed and more than 12 others injured after a factory wall collapsed on their hutments in the northern Indian state of Himachal Pradesh Wednesday, a senior police official said.

"The incident took place at Saraj Majra village in the state's Baddi town, some 120 km from state capital Shimla, early this morning when the boundary wall of the factory adjoining a big slum suddenly collapsed due to a storm," he said, on condition of anonymity.

While eight people died on the spot, those injured have been admitted to Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research in the neighboring state of Punjab's capital Chandigarh, where they were referred to by a local hospital.

"The death toll may go up later in the day as the condition of some of the injured is serious. Doctors at the hospital are trying their best to treat the injured," the official said, adding that senior officials are on the spot to assess the damage.

A probe has also been ordered into the incident as well as how the people managed to construct the illegal slums near the factory, the official said.

Last month, some 26 people were killed and 28 others injured after the wall of a wedding hall collapsed due to heavy rains and thunderstorm in the western Indian state of Rajasthan.
