A mortar round fired by anti-government militants in Afghanistan's northern Faryab province struck a residential area, killing three children and injuring another, provincial police spokesman Abdul Karim Yurush said Monday.

"A mortar round fired by Taliban rebels in Khawja Sabzposh district on Saturday struck a house killing three innocent children and injuring another," Yurush told APD.

All the victims aged from seven to nine years belonged to the same family, the official added.

Taliban militants haven't claimed responsibility for the attack.

Militancy, conflicts and counter-militancy left more than 3,430 civilians dead and injured more than 7,000 others in the conflict-hit Afghanistan in 2017, according to a report of United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) released here last month.
