Pic story of Jiuhe Zhuo dance native to SW China's Tibet

LHASA, July 20, 2020 (Xinhua) -- Jiuhe Zhuo dance, or "waist drum dance," originating in Qonggyai County of Shannan, has a storied history of more than 1,300 years. It is a popular dancing form for the native people of Shannan is said to be a prayer for good fortune.

The dance was honred by being listed as a national intagible cultute heritage in 2014.

Nyima, an inheritor of the Jiuhe Zhuo dance, began to learn the art from his father at the age of nine and has been dedicated to performing the Zhuo dance for over 60 years. His dedication and still once earned his a national award for folk arts.

After decades meticulously studying of the dance, Nyima has formed his unique style. During a performance, he plays the role of the principal dancer and controls the movements and rhythm of the dance. Nyima has trained dozens of apprentices and has assembled a Zhuo dance performing team in Jiuhe Village. Today, the young team members often perform in different venues across the region. The Zhuo dance has become an important aspect and contributing factor in the reduction of poverty among the local villagers.
