A gunman is in custody after ambushing police officers in the Bronx twice in 12 hours, the Associated Press reports.

The man was captured after walking into a police station in the Bronx early Sunday morning and began shooting, hitting a lieutenant and missing other police personnel before running out of bullets, laid down and tossed his pistol.

The second attack came hours after the same man approached a patrol van and fired at two officers, wounding one, the police say. Despite multiple shots fired in the incidents, nobody was killed and all are expected to recover.

According to New York City Police Commissioner Dermot Shea, the gunman had a lengthy criminal history, including a 2002 shooting and carjacking where he also fired a gun at officers. Shea also lashed out criminal justice reform activists who held a demonstration against excessive force by police, arguing that the protests helped create an anti-police environment.

However, Shea did not offer any evidence that the gunman knew of these protests or was influenced by them. Reacting to the attacks on NYPD officers, New York state governor Andrew Cuomo issued a statement saying, "We have zero tolerance for attacks of any kind against law enforcement, and the person or people responsible will be held accountable to the fullest extent of the law."
