Afghan conflict and militancy have claimed the lives of nine people including a service member of the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) on Thursday.

The remaining eight more casualties include four policemen and four Taliban militants, according to officials.

A soldier with the ISAF lost his life in militants' attack in the eastern region of Afghanistan on Thursday, a ISAF statement released here confirmed.

"An International Security Assistance Force service member died as a result of an enemy forces attack in eastern Afghanistan today, " the statement of the multinational force sent to media outlets said.

However, it didn't say the nationality of the victim and the exact place of the incident, adding "it is ISAF policy to defer casualty identification procedures to the relevant national authorities."

Earlier in the day, four police personnel including a district police chief lost their lives as an explosive device went off in Ghazni province, a local official said.

"Two mines were planted by militants this morning on a road in Waghaz district of Ghazni province and police, after spotting the lethal devices, defused one and were busy defusing the other when it exploded, killing the district police chief Mohammad Qasim along with three of his bodyguards on the spot," spokesman for provincial government Shafiq Nang told Xinhua.

One more police constable sustained injuries in the blast, he added.

Similarly, gun battle between police and Taliban militants left four insurgents including a local commander dead in Dasht-e-Archi district of Kunduz province, 250 km north of Kabul, on Thursday.

"Units of police backed by the army kicked off cleanup operations in parts of Dasht-e-Archi district early this morning and so far four Taliban militants including their commander have been killed," provincial police chief Mustafa Mohsini told reporters.

He also said that seven more militants have been injured.

The cleanup operations would continue till the eviction of insurgents from Dasht-e-Archi district and adjoining areas, Mohsini added.

Militancy and conflicts have gained new momentum since the Taliban launched the so-called spring offensive on May 12 in Afghanistan.
