The northeastern Chinese city Jilin on Thursday closed all barbershops and bathhouses in the city proper in its latest effort to contain the COVID-19 epidemic.

In an announcement on Thursday, the city's COVID-19 prevention and control headquarters said other business venues that could see public gatherings, including beauty salons and nail salons, must be shuttered pending further notice.

The city in Jilin Province has adopted several stringent measures to curb the spread of the novel coronavirus, including suspending all coach and tourist charter bus services and applying closed-off management to all the city's residential communities and villages.

The measures came after Shulan, a county-level city administered by the city of Jilin, recently reported multiple domestically transmitted COVID-19 cases.

Jilin Province reported four new confirmed COVID-19 cases Tuesday, all in the city of Jilin.
