U.K. Prime Minister Boris Johnson said on Thursday that face coverings will be "useful" when the COVID-19 restrictions are eased.

The recently-recovered prime minister said the face coverings will "give people confidence they can go back to work".

Boris' remarks came just two days after Health Secretary Matt Hancock said there was only "weak science" supporting advice from the Scottish government that people should wear face coverings in shops and on public transport.

The Prime Minister announced that his country had recorded 674 COVID-19 deaths in the past 24 hours, pushing the total number to 26,711. The number of hospitalized people stands at 15,043.

Boris promised to ensure medical personnel get the necessary protective gear in time in order to protect them in their duty.

He reiterated that the U.K. is on a downward trend in terms on COVID-19, and said that he will announce a "comprehensive plan next week" on how to reopen the country.

"How we can get our children back to school, back into childcare, second, and third how we can travel to work and how we can make life in the workplace safer? And in short how we can continue to suppress the disease and at the same time re-start the economy?" he posed.

"A huge amount of work has been going on on that that plan and as we produce it we are being guided by the science, and we will try to build the maximum political consensus as we produce it across all parties and across the U.K.," he said.

He appealed for unity in the fight against COVID-19 if the country is to emerge victorious.
