President Vladimir Putin has signed a law that permits tests on students to see if they have consumed drugs or psychotropic substances, the Kremlin website said Saturday.

Students at secondary schools, colleges and universities are involved in the tests, which will be divided into two parts, socio-psychological and medical.

The tests would be voluntary. To test a child under 15, consent from one of the parents is required. Following the age of 15, a teenager may make his or her own decision.

If the test results are positive, the teenagers will be sent to a specialized medical institution, where a consent is expected either from parents or themselves.
