"The Hobbit" rules North American box office for 2nd week

The latest Hobbit movie edged out "Unbroken" to take the number one spot at the North American weekend box office.

"The Hobbit: The Battle Of The Five Armies", directed by Oscar-winning Peter Jackson, took the top place with an estimated 41.4 million U.S. dollars in North American ticket sales over the weekend. It has grossed a total of 168 million dollars since it was released.

Opening at 3,131 locations, Angelina Jolie's "Unbroken" took second place with an estimated 31.7 million dollars. Including Christmas Day, the movie has so far earned a total of 47.3 million dollars.

"Unbroken" tells the story of U.S. bombardier Louis Zamperini, who was taken captive during World War II.

Another Christmas Day opener "Into The Woods" ranked the third this weekend with an estimated 31 million dollars in ticket sales.
