At least 44 die in Peru after bus plunges into ravine

At least 44 people were killed in a bus crash on Wednesday near Arequipa in southern Peru.

The regional head of police General Walter Ortiz said in an interview that 43 had died at the site of the crash, after the bus tumbled down a 200-meter ravine, while one person died in a nearby hospital.

The accident happened at around 1:30 a.m. local time, 782 kilometers of the South Panamerican Highway.

Initial inquiries found that the driver seems to have fallen asleep and lost control.
