Canadian awarded for cartoon portrayal of Confucius

A Canadian cartoonist's portrayal of Confucius won first prize at an international cartoon contest in southwestern Guiyang city on Saturday.

In Oleg Dergachov's work, four modern-day students are guided by Confucius while using computers to study.

"For me, it's very important to show their connection between past and future," Dergachov said. "These children use modern technology to study his theory and philosophy."

The contest was aimed at finding the best cartoons featuring the Chinese thinker and educator.

"We hope to modernize the image of Confucius through cartoons, so that his appearance is less generic and can be appreciated by more people," said Wang Liuyi, organizer of the event.

Solicitations for entries began at the end of last year. A total of 1,120 cartoons from more than 70 countries and regions were submitted to the contest, including single-panel comics and comic strips.
