Two military personnel of the Libyan government were killed by unknown gunmen on Saturday at a checkpoint southwest of the Libyan capital.

"Gunmen attacked a military checkpoint of Battalion 301 in the town of Aziziyah in the southwestern outskirts of Tripoli, killing two members of the Battalion," a member of the Libyan Defense Ministry told Xinhua.

"The gunmen fled after being pursued by a patrol of the Battalion, and entered the nearby town of Warshafana," he added, confirming that the main road leading to Tripoli has been blocked following the attack.

Armed robberies and kidnappings frequently occur on the road between Aziziyah and Tripoli.
