The CPC National Congress is one of China’s most consequential political events.

2,287 delegates will gather in Beijing for the 19th CPC National Congress to choose the CPC’s senior leadership for the next five years and outline goals and policies that will help shape the country’s future.

Electing new leaders

The 19th CPC National Congress will elect approximately 200 members of the Central Committee of the CPC - the Party’s highest authority - and approve the Party’s agenda until 2022.

The new Central Committee will then elect members of the Political Bureau, members of the Political Bureau Standing Committee and most importantly, the head of the Party.

It was at the 18th National Congress in 2012 that Xi Jinping took over as the General Secretary of the CPC Central Committee.

Elections will also be held for the 130-seat Central Commission for Discipline Inspection.

Setting a course for the future

Delegates will hear and examine reports by the Party's Central Committee and the Central Commission for Discipline Inspection; discuss and decide major issues concerning the Party; and review the Constitution of the Communist Party of China.

Since the 18th National Congress, the Party and the country have been through major changes and achieved dramatic progress. Both are about to enter a new phase of development.

Choosing new leadership and setting a course for the next five years will determine China’s short-term development and long-term future.
