The Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) will maintain its foreign policy of independence, peace and friendship, Premier Pak Pong Ju said Tuesday, the country's National Day.

Speaking at a national meeting, Pak noted that late leaders Kim Il Sung and Kim Jong Il had always considered military affairs as the top priority of the country and had made all-out efforts to bolster national defense capability.

"Under the leadership of Kim Jong Un, the DPRK is advancing straight along the road of independence, the Songun idea and socialism," as indicated by the two deceased top leaders, the official KCNA news agency quoted him as saying.

The DPRK will make every effort to overcome all difficulties it faces, mend North-South ties, and open a new phase of independent reunification, he stressed.

On the country's diplomatic strategy and relations with the outside world, Pak said the DPRK will maintain its foreign policy of independence, peace and friendship; strengthen relations with countries that respect its sovereignty and adopt a friendly posture; and contribute its share to world security and prosperity.

Also on Tuesday, a number of artistic performances were held in the capital city and the rest of the DPRK to celebrate the 66th anniversary of the founding of the state.
