Noctilucent Orchid to appear at Hong Kong Flower Fair

A new hybrid of flower, Noctilucent Butterfly Orchid, will be at sale on the biggest in-door Chinese New Year Flower of Hong Kong beginning on January 25 in East Point City.

Two kinds of Noctilucent Butterfly Orchid will appear in 7^th^ Chinese New Year Flower Fair for the first time. They are named “Noctilucent Pearl and “Noctilucent Paradise. They got their name because they shine in the dark.

The flowers are cultivated by Yueng Siu Long, a famous orchid grower in Hong Kong. There are about 500 of them in the fair and each will be sold from HK$160 to HK$180 , 10% more than normal orchids. The fair will also introduce the “Snake Orchid for the Chinese lunar year of the snake 2013. These series of flowers have the pattern like the scale of the animal.

Because of the typhoon and rainy weather last year, providers estimate the price of flowers will go up in 2013.

Among the Hong Konger-most-loved flower of Chinese New Year -- Butterfly Orchid, Chinese Cymbidium, Narcissus and Peach Blossom -- the price of Peach Blossom is increased the most. According to the famous peach grower: “The price will at least increase 50%. The most expensive one, 18 feet tall, has sold more than HK$1 million. The other three kind of flowers will increase at least 10%. he said

The fair will last for 16 days. A total of 3 million visitors are expected, 25% more than last year. The total sales are estimated at about HK$180 million.
