Membersof the Chinese press from Asia, Europe and America gathered yesterday for one of the largest news media gatherings in Asia. The 49th annual conference of The Chinese Language Press Institute officially kicked off with 120 press group representatives meeting at the Dongfang Hotel in Guangzhou. The program for the conference included talks by notable representatives from various media groups covering a diverse range of topics related to the news industry.

Here's what some of them had to say:

Wang Guoqing, Vice Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the CPPCC National Committee and Former Deputy Director of the State Council Information Office of China:

To tell stories about China well, media groups should stick to three "getting close to" Principles for External Publicity, namely, getting close to Chinese national situations, local readers' demands for information and their thinking habits. Also, in order to make our stories more readable among international readers, media groups ought to innovate ways of expression and study alternative reading habits so as to precisely communicate what foreign readers really want to know. Media groups should expound China's image in an objective, correct and comprehensive way, including its achievements and problems, historic and current situation, culture and politics.

Shen Haixiong, Standing Committee Member and Head of the Publicity

Department of the CPC Guangdong Provincial Committee

Where there are readers, there is publicity. Facing the changing situation of media industry, press groups should explore their own development patterns by promoting innovation and transformation.

Xu Yonghong, Standing Committee Member and Head of the Publicity Department of the CPC Guangzhou Municipal Committee:

An innovative environment contributes to the development of new media. Press groups in Guangzhou conform to current trends and accelerate transformation and upgrades, further enhancing the integration of traditional and new media.

Gu Jianqing, President of Guangzhou Daily Press Group:

Guangzhou Daily is striving to establish a one-stop news gathering and editing system that combines traditional newspaper and multimedia platforms. The new media platforms Guangzhou Daily have been developing include Guangzhou Cankao as well as the WeChat platform – wsqejt. Today Silk Road Integrated Media Platform has been officially launched with China's first English-language newspaper on the "Belt and Road" initiative, expressing commitment to this initiative.
