At least six people including three female teachers and two students were killed and several others were injured when a blast hit a school van in Pakistan's northwest tribal area of Bajaur Agency on Tuesday morning, local media reported.

Geo News said that the van was targeted when it was carrying students and teachers to school in Salarzai town of Bajaur Agency, a militancy-infested tribal region at Pakistan-Afghanistan border.

Police said that the van was targeted by a remote controlled device and explosive materials were fixed at roadside.

Rescue teams shifted the injured people and bodies to a nearby hospital.

No group has claimed responsibility for the attack yet.

Police cordoned off the area and kicked off investigations.

Number of out-of-school children is rising every year due to large scale destruction of school buildings by militants.

According to official data, around 109 schools have been blown up since the spillover of militancy to Bajaur region in 2007.
