Chinese wines are impressive and have a great potential in Britain, Steven Spurrier, a renowned British wine expert has said.

His remarks came during a Chinese wine masterclass tasting event held here for the first time on Friday night.

Describing the Chinese wines as "superb, impressive and surprising", he said he is "keen to taste them again in the coming days."

The event was fully booked, with attendants having opportunities to taste 10 kinds of wines from five regions in China, including Hebei, Shanxi and Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region, among others.

For Andy Garside, a British marketing person and wine lover, Chinese wines "are all very good".

"I am really impressive for the taste. I would definitely look for them to drink in the future," said Garside.

"Our goal is to help the world learn more about Chinese wines by introducing top quality Chinese wines to UK market, which is one of the largest market for fine wines in the world," said Michael Sun, an event organizer and director of Panda Fine Wine.

China is expected to overtake France as the second largest wine market by 2023. At that time, the value of the Chinese market would reach nearly 18 billion U.S. dollars.
