Indonesian navy receives first submarine ordered from S. Korea

JAKARTA, Aug. 28 (APD) — Indonesian navy received on Monday the first submarine it ordered from a South Korean defense industry, making it the third submarine operated by the navy at present.

The submarine, codenamed Nagapasa 403, was resulted from Indonesia-South Korea defense cooperation in marine sector of which Indonesia ordered a total of 3 units of that kind.

The bilateral cooperation was conducted on transfer-of-technology scheme, allowing Indonesia to partake in the process and produce the third unit of the submarine.

The submarine from the type of 209/1400 was produced by South Korea’s Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering shipyard with design, engineering and production processes commenced since 2015.

“Production of the second submarine is underway now in South Korea. The third unit would be produced by PT PAL shipyard,” Indonesian Navy Commander Admiral Ade Supandi said in his remarks to welcome the submarine in Indonesian navy base of Dermaga Ujung, Surabaya, referring to the name of state-run shipyard firm.

The naming of the submarine was taken from Javanese mythology, referring to the sacred and powerful arrows owned by a prince in the old Hindu kingdom of Alengka.

Ade said the transfer of technology scheme in defense industry cooperation would significantly contribute to the nation’s capability in developing ultimate weaponry system, which would eventually make the nation less-depended from foreign producers to procure defense instruments.

Indonesian navy’s Nagapasa 403 submarine is claimed to have advanced navigation and warfare technologies, is fitted 8 torpedo launchers, supplied with Black Shark torpedoes that are capable to cruise 50 kilometers at 50 knots of speed.

Besides that, the Chang Bogo-class submarine is also equipped with electronics warfare system and has another advanced system to spread sea mines.

The submarine is operated buy 41 crews, has maximum speed of 21 knots.

Reports said that the submarine would be stationed in Indonesia’s central region of Palu, Sulawesi island.

The other two Indonesian submarines co-produced with the South Korean producer would be codenamed Trisula 404 and Nagarangsang 405.

The initial two submarines operated by Indonesian navy were codenamed Cakra 401 and Nenggala 402.
