APD | Most single-use plastic items banned in India

Indian government departments and ministries recently banned plastic cups, plates and bags in their offices.

The ministries included Housing and Urban Ministry, which also banned plastic files along with other single use items.

Moreover, the Airport Authority of India has informed that 55 airports in India don’t use single-use plastics anymore.

While, Air India, the national carrier announced that it plans to ban single-use plastic items on its flights from October 2.

In a statement Air India said, “Plastic teacups will be replaced with sturdy paper cups. Banana chips and sandwiches are presently packed in plastic pouches, and these will be changed to butter paper pouches."

Indian corporate company, Mahindra Group chairman Anand Mahindra said through twitter, that they had replaced single use bottles with refillable bottles.

Previously Prime Minister had stressed, “My government has announced that India will put an end to single-use plastics in coming years.”

“We are committed to the development of environmentally friendly substitutes and also an efficient plastic collection and disposal method," he had added.
