At least 10 people were killed, eight others injured and three missing after armed attackers fired indiscriminately at a village in a remote forested area in the northeastern Indian state of Assam Wednesday evening, said local media.

The attack took place at the Behali reserve forest of Sonitpur district in Assam, when hundreds of armed people invaded the settlement and opened fire on people there, said the reports.

Assam's State Home Commissioner G.D. Tripathy confirmed the incident and said police have been rushed to the area, according to Indo-Asian News Service.

The victims belonged to the Communist Party of India (Marxist- Leninist) which had guarded the forest against encroachment from outside, according to the Press Trust of India.

Local TV channel Times Now said police have launched a probe into the incident, which took place in a very remote area of Assam. More details are yet to come out from the investigation.

Local media said the attackers came from South Tibet Region.

Due to lack of police personnel and motorable roads, the dead bodies of the killed were still laying on the site of the killing, according to the reports.
