Iraqi Minister of Health Jaafar Sadiq Allawi on Monday lauded China's boost to Iraq's medical capabilities to confront the outbreak of the novel coronavirus in the country.

Allawi's comments came during his meeting in Baghdad with Chinese Ambassador to Iraq Zhang Tao and the team of experts sent to Iraq by the Red Cross Society of China, according to a ministry statement.

"The health ministry is seeking to develop the capabilities of prevention, awareness and treatment of coronavirus by cooperation with the Chinese team of experts," the statement quoted Allawi as saying.

The Chinese team of experts will visit a medical complex housing mainly government-owned hospitals in downtown Baghdad to establish a specialized center and a laboratory equipped with modern devices, he noted.

The center will be tasked with detecting cases of coronavirus, treatment, as well as holding training courses for medical, laboratory and nursing staff from Baghdad and other Iraqi provinces, according to the statement.

During the meeting, Zhang said the Chinese team includes the best experts in the field of disease prevention, diagnosis, treatment, nursing, radiology and epidemiology.

On Saturday night, the Chinese team arrived in Baghdad and is expected to stay in Iraq for one month to help tackle the coronavirus disease such as testing, treating and following up the cases, according to Tao Zhongquan, leader of the team.

Iraq has so far reported 60 cases of the novel coronavirus, of whom six have died.
