President of the United States of America Joe Biden has organized a controversial "Summit for Democracy" summit. Nepal is also participating on this summit which is scheduled to be held on December 10, the day for International Human Rights Day. Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba will be leading the Nepali delegation, which was endorsed by the Nepal's Cabinet itself. A total of 110 countries, including Nepal, have been invited to the Summit which will be organized in a virtual manner.

However, Nepal's northern neighbour China, and South Asian countries Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and Afghanistan have not been invited. President Biden has already announced that "Democracy doesn’t happen by accident. We have to defend it, fight for it, strengthen it, renew it." The Biden-Harris Administration has made clear that renewing democracy in the United States and around the world is essential to meeting the unprecedented challenges of our time.

Controversy on Taiwan

President Biden has invited Taiwan in the Summit, which was against the "One China Policy" of United States itself. China has furiously objected with the recognition and invitation of Taiwan government in the Summit. Nepal has also adopted the "One China Policy" for a long time. Nepal is sharing an international forum this time where Taiwan is there as an independent State. Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba have to tackle this controversial issue with utmost sensibility.

Deuba government is already facing several obstacles with China, like border demarcation in western Nepal, smooth operation of border checkpoints and appointment of ambassador to China. The government had failed to appoint ambassador to China even the government had appointed ambassadors to India, UK and USA.

Recently, the Ambassador of China to Nepal Hou Yanqi wrote an article on Chinese philosophy of democracy. She has expressly articulated that : "China actively promote the building of a new model of international relations based on mutual respect, fairness, justice and win-win cooperation, and holds that all countries, large or small, strong or weak, rich or poor, are equal."

She has further said, "Major country should behave as it is, make the future of humanity their priority, and shoulder greater responsibility for world peace and development. Certain big country wants to lecture others on the democracy issue in the world, and however domestically it’s deeply troubled by political polarisation, wealth disparity, social division, racial divide. Internationally, it imposed its own model of democracy on other countries through forces which only led to conflict and chaos in many countries and firmly opposed by the peace lovers around the world. Democracy is not an ornament for decoration and should be used to solve the problems which the people want to solve. We are willing to work together with countries which stand up for justice in the world including Nepal to uphold true democracy and oppose pseudo-democracy."

Nepal at this juncture need to be more serious and sensible. However, Nepal is a federal republican democratic state, and it has to take seriously on the concern of China and democratic India and USA.
