Eight passengers were killed and six others wounded in a traffic accident in Afghanistan's northern province of Badakhshan, a local official said Tuesday.

The incident took place late on Monday, when a minibus skidded off the road and fell down into a ditch in Gurkashan area of provincial capital Faizabad, leaving eight passengers, including women and children, dead and six others injured, Nik Mohammad Nazari, provincial governor spokesman, told Xinhua.

The injured were shifted to a hospital in Faizabad where four of the wounded remained in critical condition.

Reckless driving is mainly blamed for traffic incidents on Afghan congested roads and highways.
