An Israeli soldier was killed during a predawn raid in the West Bank by a stone thrown at him, the Israeli military said on Tuesday.

The incident took place in the town of Ya'bad, west of Jenin city in the northern West Bank.

A military spokesperson issued a statement saying the soldier was killed by a rock thrown at his head "during operational activity" in the town.

The spokesperson identified the soldier as Staff Sgt. Amit Ben Ygal, 21, from the Golani Brigade Reconnaissance Unit, adding that his family has been notified. He was posthumously promoted to Sergeant 1st Class.

The violence came amidst increasing tensions between Israel and the Palestinians over Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's plan to annex parts of the occupied West Bank.
