3 protesters killed in demonstrations in Sudan

Sudanese Police announced that three protesters were killed in demonstrations in Omdurman city on Wednesday, official SUNA news agency reported on Thursday.

"The Omdurman city on Wednesday witnessed riots and illegal gatherings in which the police and security forces dispersed protesters using tear gas in accordance with the law," Hashim Abdel-Rahim, Sudanese police spokesman, was quoted in the report as saying.

"The police forces later received reports about some injuries and three death cases. Investigation is underway under the supervision of the prosecution," he added.

The demonstration in Omdurman city continued until late Wednesday evening in protest against the economic conditions.

Since Dec. 19, 2018, various areas in Sudan, including Khartoum, have been witnessing popular protests over the deteriorating economic conditions and price hikes of basic commodities.

According to government statistics, 22 people have been killed during the popular protests.
