The United States on Monday criticized China’s retaliatory tariff measures as “unfair trade” before unveiling a new list of tariffs on Chinese products this week.

The US triggered the trade tension when it announced on March 22 to impose tariffs on up to 60 billion US dollars worth of Chinese imports.

White House criticized in a statement China’s retaliation as “unfair trading practices” on “fairly traded US exports”.

China on Sunday slapped extra tariffs of up to 25 percent on 128 items of US products in response to the Trump administration’s high duties on Chinese steel and aluminum.

“I have to say that what was announced by our spokesperson of the Ministry of Commerce was a response to the US 232 investigation, not the 301 which is not announced yet. But if they do, we will certainly take countermeasures of the same proportion, the same scale, and same intensity," Cui Tiankai, Chinese Ambassador to the US told CGTN on Monday.

The new list of 50 billion to 60 billion US dollars’ worth of annual imports is expected to target “largely high-technology” products from China, and it may take effect more than two months after being announced, Reuters quoted US officials as saying.

The list is expected to target products that benefit from China’s “Made in China 2025”, a program that aims to upgrade the country’s manufacturing industry with high-tech products.
