At least two persons were killed and more than 28 others injured in a road accident in eastern Indian state of West Bengal Wednesday, police said.

"The accident occurred when a private passenger bus collided with a truck on Ramgunj Road in the state's North Dinajpur district," a senior police official said.

While two persons, including the driver of the bus, died on the spot, those injured have been admitted to a nearby government hospital by local residents, he said.

"The condition of some of the injured passengers are serious," the official said.

The bus, carrying over 30 passengers, apart from one driver and a conductor, was going to Siliguri town from Balurghat when the accident happened.

A probe has been ordered into the incident, the official said.

"It seemed to be the fault of the bus driver as he was speeding at the time of the accident."

India has the highest number of road fatalities in the world. Road accidents occur mostly due to poor driving or badly maintained roads and vehicles.
