India's anti-graft party chief Arvind Kejriwal was attacked Friday while he was on a campaign trail for upcoming general elections in the northern state of Haryana, a police official said.

"The 45-year-old Aam Aadmi Party chief was hit hard on his neck by an unidentified person while he was campaigning for his party. The attacker has been arrested after being trashed by Kejriwal's supporters," he said on condition of anonymity.

Kejriwal, a former Chief Minister of Delhi, has, however, asked his supporters to stay calm and not retaliate against any such attacks.

The anti-graft activist turned politician is quite popular among the middle class in India.

Barely a year and a half after he formed his party after breaking away from his mentor and veteran Gandhian Anna Hazare's non violence movement for a corruption Ombudsman, Kejriwal formed a government in the Indian capital following the Aam Aadmi Party's spectacular performance in its debut elections in December last year.
