Egypt, Russia help mediate a third peace deal in Syria

Russia have helped to create a "de-escalation zone" in Syria.

The latest ceasefire agreement was made by Syrian forces and rebels in the Syrian city of Homs and the eastern Ghouta region. It came into effect on Thursday ending a three-year siege on the area that has witnessed intense clashes and huge loss of lives. The cessation of hostilities was mediated by Egypt and is being overseen by Russia.

Ahmed Al Jerba, head of the opposition group Al Ghad Current, who signed the deal, said Egypt was the mediator in this agreement and it can play a major role in future deals as well.

According to the ceasefire deal, a "de-escalation zone" is being established. It's the third such deal in the country. Al Jerba hopes the agreement on a ceasefire in Homs and Ghouta could be the blue print for a comprehensive peace process.

A route is being opened for humanitarian aid to reach more than 150,000 people in the cities. Russian forces are setting up checkpoints to monitor the implementation of the ceasefire from all sides.

This is the third ceasefire agreement in Syria.

Experts hope it can be maintained for the long term and could be the catalyst for retaining security and stability in the war-torn country.
