Brunei to join Worldskills ASEAN Competition in Vietnam

Eight Brunei competitors are ready to participate in the upcoming WorldSkills ASEAN Competition to be held in Hanoi, Vietnam from Oct. 24 to 26.

A Brunei flag handover and blessing ceremony were held here on Tuesday.

The eight competitors from four technical institutions were led by team leader Hajah Rohana, instructor from Sultan Saiful Rijal Technical College, Institute of Brunei Technical Education, Ministry of Education, who is also the second expert for the cooking completion skill area.

The skill areas that Brunei team are participating included Automobile Technology with two competitors from Mechanical Training Center, Cooking Skill with two competitors from Sultan Saiful Rijal Technical College, Refrigeration and Air-Conditioning Sill with two competitors from Jefri Bolkiah Engineering College and Welding with another two competitors from Sultan Bolkiah Vocational School.

Earlier in the week, another team consisting of official delegate, technical delegate and experts (from private and public sector organizations) departed forHanoi to attend the Organizing Committee Meeting and Technical Committee Meeting prior to the competition.

The competitors were selected through an internal competition held by each vocational and technical school in the respected areas and one of the competition criteria was that the contestant must not be above 22 years old at the time of the competition.

The competitors have been practicing and undergoing training for the past six months with the experts from Industries and Technical and Vocational Education Training, Ministry of Education.

Among the objectives of the WorldSkills ASEAN competition are to promote and upgrade the skills standard in the region and consequently at the international level, as well as to strengthen solidarity and foster technical cooperation in vocational or technical education and training between member countries.

The WorldSkills ASEAN Competition is a biennial event and this will be the 9th time that Brunei is participating.
