Procuratorial organs across China in 2019 approved the arrest of 1,599 suspects in criminal cases of wage defaults, up 10.6 percent year on year, the Supreme People's Procuratorate (SPP) said Thursday.

A total of 2,609 suspects in 2,396 criminal cases of wage defaults were prosecuted by procuratorial organs last year, it said.

The SPP unveiled the figures at a press conference about the progress made by China's procuratorial organs last year in fighting against defaults on the wages of workers.

Miao Shengming, an SPP official, stressed the significance of the fight against intentional wage defaults in terms of protecting migrant workers' legitimate rights and interests and helping in the country's battle against poverty.
