Honda Motor Co. will launch launch a vehicle with Level 3 autonomous driving this year, becoming the first Japanese automaker to release the car of this kind, according to sources.

With Level 3 autonomy technology, drivers will be able to leave operation of the car to the vehicle itself during traffic congestion on expressways and engage in different activities, such as reading or watching TV.

The technology will be mounted on a new Legend luxury sedan scheduled to be launched as early as next summer, the sources said.

The new Legend is expected to be priced at around 10 million yen. Honda’s car will likely be introduced after Japanese carmakers jointly test autonomous vehicle operations on public roads in Tokyo around July, they said.

Audi AG has already sold Level 3 autonomy cars in Japan, with self-driving available at busy times on expressways.

Meanwhile, BMW AG and Nissan Motor Co. have released vehicles that feature Level 2 autonomy in Japan. That technology allows drivers to take their hands off the wheel on expressways but are still required to keep their eyes on the road.

Toyota Motor Co. plans to supply its e-Palette vehicle, which features Level 4 autonomy for use in the Olympic Village when Tokyo hosts the Summer Games this year.
