**JAKARTA, June 25 (APD) ** – A police on duty was killed in a watch post of North Sumatra police headquarters in provincial capital of Medan on early Sunday, stabbed by two militants linked to a radical organization which has stated allegiance to Islamic State (IS) terrorist group.
The attack occurred around 3.00 a.m. after the two militants jumped in from the headquarters’ fence and stabbed a sleeping police in a watch post to die. Besides killing the police, the perpetrators also tried to burn the watch post.
Their violent act was eventually caught by another police on duty who immediately called his colleagues in the vicinity.
The two militants were shot at on the scene by the incoming police, leaving one of them killed while another one in critical condition.
Speaking on the sidelines of an Eid celebration session with President Joko Widodo in the presidential palace here, Indonesian Police Chief General Tito Karnavian said the perpetrators were members of a cell affiliated to IS-linked Jamaah Anshorut Daulah (JAD), a domestic radical organization.
Police initially had the sketchy information over the plan to attack the headquarters following the arrests against three persons in the province two weeks ago, Tito said.
“The cell group prioritizes attacks against the police which they regarded of attacker infidels (against them),” Tito added.
The two perpetrators carried the attack in North Sumatra police headquarters were identified as SP and AR who died in police’s retaliation. Those perpetrators were sidewalks mongers selling juice and cigarette, Tito said.
SP is now treated in a provincial police hospital, would be questioned later after he recovered from the shot wounds.
In a separated occasion later in the day, a spokesperson at National Police headquarters Setyo Wasistp said that the order to attack police facility in Medan was issued by Bahrun Naim, an Indonesian national now serving as an IS executives in Syria.
“We have the information related to Bahrun Naim (order). They were told to conduct the attack immediately. If they don’t have the bombs, they can do it with any means they have,” Setyo said, citing to information extracted from the ones previously arrested by police in the province.
Setyo added that during police search in SP’s house aftermath the attack, they found IS black flag set in a wall, several books and VCD discs about IS and pictures of IS leader Abu Bakar Al Baghdadi.
The trail of Bahrun Naim was detected in the IS-claimed bombings in Jakarta on January last year and in May which killed and injured several police on duty.
