Blade Runner 2049: What are the critics saying?

Critics have had a first peak at the new Blade Runner - and they've "seen things you people wouldn't believe".

There is only one thing more exciting than watching C-beams glitter in the dark near the Tanhauser Gate, and that is having a the chance to witness, firsthand, the sequel to a cult classic.

A few critics have had such a privilege, and Warner Bros has lifted the veil of secrecy and allowed the selected few to post on Twitter their first thoughts on the film - no spoilers allowed.

In a nutshell, Denis Villeneuve's film is a "visually stunning", "emotionally engaging", a "breathtaking masterpiece".

And, just like we predicted, it's been deemed "better than the original".

"Early word on BLADE RUNNER 2049 is very strong. Doubt Denis Villeneuve at your own peril, people," wrote BMD's Scott Wampler.

"Everyone bow down to Denis Villeneuve. He's done the impossible and delivered a huge home run with 'Blade Runner 2049'. Loved it," wrote Collider's Steven Weintraub.

And then, Fandango's Erik Davis said what everyone was waiting to hear: "I think this Blade Runner is better than the original".

"And also proves Denis Villeneuve is the most exciting director working right now," he added.

CinemaBlend's Eric Eisenberg called it "visually mind-blowing sci-fi with noir roots shinning through in a tight, twisty mystery".

"Best of 2017 so far," he added.

While some praise the film's director and his courage to take on Ridley Scott's 1982 masterpiece, others highlight cinematographer Roger Deakins' work as the film's best.

"All I can say about BLADE RUNNER 2049 is...give Roger Deakins the Oscar now. Absolutely stunning visuals," wrote Torontoist's Jesse Hawken.

But fear is a lingering topic in the first film, with replicant Roy Batty asking Harrison Ford's Rick Deckard: "Quite an experience to live in fear, isn't it?".

And Collider's Steven Weintraub has warned fans that they should fear any early reviews, for the film is "absolutely loaded with spoilers".

"Even the plot of the film is a spoiler," he wrote.

"If you are going to see it avoid reviews."

Blade Runner 2049 opens in UK cinemas on 6 October.
