Different from other relaxing Friday nights, people in east China's Hangzhou city had rushed to the blood donation points and lined up to offer help for the injured from a deadly gas explosion at a local restaurant on Friday morning.
At 8:00 p.m., queuing citizens were found to have surrounded the blood collection vehicle at Wulin Square, some of whom had waited for three hours.
As of 9:00 p.m., the entire hall of the fourth floor at the Blood Center of Zhejiang Province was still filled with volunteer donors. Meanwhile, more people were walking in.
"The number of people coming to donate today has surged at least seven or eight times over the past few days, and more and more have come after work. Now the vehicle has been "overloaded", unable to receive more blood donors. We’ve arranged other vehicles to transfer some people," said a staff member from the center.
The explosion occurred at around 8:30 a.m. in Hangzhou, killing two people and injuring 45, according to the latest official announcement by local government. Among the wounded, 12 people sustained severe injuries.
Following the incident, the Blood Center of Zhejiang Province started the emergency plan as well as looked for more blood donors of type A and O via their social media account.
"I just took the high-speed rail back to Hangzhou. Once I arrived at the railway station, I caught a taxi and rushed there," said local man Hu Guangtao, who rebooked an earlier trip the moment he read the news. "When I saw it from the mobile news App, I came back early. People are burned and they must need a lot of blood, so I'll do my bit!"
Zhang Xiaohui, a taxi driver in Hangzhou, paused the business after hearing the news and went to the blood donation point with his taxi driver wife Li Xiajin. Zhang told China News Service that he was just trying to help others.
To date the blood donation continues, so does the treatment for the injured. The blood center hopes the citizens could come at different times.
