India’s External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar last week said that India was humiliated when it was a British colony and its colonisers took from India around $45 trillion in today’s monetary value.

Speaking in the US at an Atlantic Council event in Washington DC, Jaishankar said, “India had two centuries of humiliation by the West in its predatory form it came to India in the mid-18th century.”

“An economic study tried to estimate how much British took out of India, it ended up at a number of $45 trillion in today’s value,” he further said.

While on his visit to the US, Jaishankar also met Defence Secretary Mike Esper, National Security Advisor Robert Charles O’Brien and the Acting Homeland Security Secretary Kevin McAleenan.

Jaishankar also participated in an event at US Library of Congress to commemorate the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, the father of India.
