The Mozambican government has a plan for the acquisition, monitoring and administration of six million doses of COVID-19 vaccine for 20 percent of the population, the country's Minister of Health Armindo Tiago announced on Thursday.

Armindo Tiago spoke at the Assembly of the Republic at the 'clarification session' on matters of health, education, economics and armed conflicts.

"From the calculations we have made, Mozambique would receive about six million doses of vaccine for the 20 percent of the current population estimated at 30 million," said Tiago.

The minister said that Mozambique has already submitted its vaccination needs to the COVAX mechanism, a global initiative that allows quick access to the safe and pre-qualified vaccines by the World Health Organization.

"Currently the Ministry of Health is outlining the requirements and conditions for defining the groups to be vaccinated and also the process of the national vaccination strategy," said Tiago.

The minister also urged the public to continue to comply with the prevention measures, even when vaccines are available.

He said the national health system has a sufficient stock of medicines and personal protective equipment for the coming months.
