Chinese State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi has urged Japan to carefully deal with its nuclear polluted water.

He made the remarks during a video conversation with German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas on Wednesday.

Japan is moving forward with plans to release tonnes of nuclear polluted water into the ocean as the country's cabinet ministers approved the move on April 13. The government says the actual disposal won't begin for another two years.

According to Wang, Japan made the decision unilaterally without considering all disposal measures or disclosing all relevant information and consulting with neighboring countries.

The release of the nuclear polluted water not only directly harms the interests of the Chinese people and people from neighboring countries, but also poses threat to global marine environment, food safety and global public health.

Stressing that the decision will eventually harm the common interest of the international community including Japan, Wang urged the Japanese side to respond to the serious concerns raised by its citizens, neighboring countries and the international community.

He hopes Japan should practically carry out its international responsibilities, reconsider its current plan and carefully deal with the issue in consultation with all relevant parties and the International Atomic Energy Agency.
